Samantha Power’s Resignation

March 13, 2008

Samantha Power knows genocide. She knows so much that I sort of idolize her. I think her books are great, her speeches are great. If I could grow up to be someone, I would be Samantha Power. Given that, I may be slightly biased.

Clinton called on Power to resign after she, in a candid Scottish interview, called Clinton a monster- we know, old news. Well here is my question, if Obama is willing to dismiss the foremost genocide policy advisor over a small speech mistake, how does that bode for him in the foreign policy world? People make mistakes all the time- do you dismiss a genius for a small mistake?

Furthermore, what does that say about his stance on genocide? We already know that he is ambivalent towards some genocides and politically wash-y in how he would approach genocide. Yet, he remains very stall-worth in his care about Darfur- go figure…. It is a politically mobilizing issue.

Does he understand genocide? Does he get why countries should or should not be involved? Is he critically thinking about the topic? I haven’t really found anything on either side but I would love to know what you think.

i read that he is using some of bill’s old advisors. it’s unfortunate, because i don’t think he’s anymore concerned than they were.
